Kitchen Progress-Phase II
Earlier this summer Norman helped construct a new roof for the outdoor kitchen where the tortillas are cooked and where the kids eat. (For pictures, see post from Aug 28th.) The next step was to divide the cooking area from the eating area, so a wall and counter top were constructed. The counter top will be a serving area as well as an additional place to prepare food. The next step was to lay tile. They aren't quite done with the tile in the eating area, but are close. Below are pictures of the progress.

El Dia de La Independencia (Independence Day)
September 15th is Independence Day in Guatemala, as well as all the other Central American Countries. The kids started asking us months ago if we were going to be here on September 15th. (It still hasn't sunk into them that we are here loooong term.) It is a big deal to them. All the school age kids were able to participate in the Independence Day Parade with their class. Each class had a theme that the kids were to dress up as. What a huge job for Sebastian and Oralia to prepare all these costumes, but what a huge blessing to the kids! They were looking forward to it for months!
The events started the evening before on September 14th. Right after sunset, the kids marched through the streets with their classes from school carrying lanterns they made. Norman had a hand in helping make the 8 lanterns needed for the kids here in the home who participated. A few bands also marched along. Then after that, we all went to the park and watched 2 bands play.
On the morning of the 15th was the big parade. All the kids were up, fed, dressed and out the door by 8:00 for the 9:00 parade. Norman and I took the 3 little girls, ages 3, 3, and 5 to watch. It was alot of fun especially when we knew so many kids in it! In the afternoon we went to the nearby town of Canilla to watch a competition between 5 bands. Their bands are a little different than Millard North. ;-) We had a great time during all the activities!

These girls are from a school in an aldea (village). They are wearing the headdress they wear for special occasions along with their indigenous outfits they all still wear on a daily basis.
The girl in the middle in the gray dress is Lorena from the home. She is gorgeous both inside and out!
These are Marimba players who played while we waited for the band competition to start. They played for over 2 hours. The competition didn't start until an hour and a half after it was scheduled. I think that is even late for latin time!

Noche de Pijama
What do you get when you take 5 girls ages 10-12, 1 worker age 19, and me? The perfect group to have a Noche de Pijama, aka Slumber Party, of course. The evening started with supper whose menu was chosen by the girls. They wanted North American fare and hamburgers and french fries were their choice along with a very chocolatey desert. All the girls who were available pitched in to help.

After dinner we watched a movie, danced (more like jumped around) to music, had a pillow fight, laughed, and then slept! It was a great time with the girls and I am really thankful for the opportunity to spend it with them. Of course, this started something. The teen-age boys are asking Norman when their night is. Of course the food is what they are really interested in and they will sleep outdoors! :-)
